What goes into choosing a good pediatrician?

When you're expecting a baby, it's fun to create gift registries and make birth plans. But have you picked a pediatrician for your baby yet?

It's a good idea to start thinking about this while you're pregnant as trusting a doctor with your child's medical needs is a big decision. It's also important to know what to look for in a pediatrician since you'll have a relationship with them for the next 18 years.

Your pediatrician comes to know your family as your child grows up. You also want your child to feel comfortable with your choice of doctor as they get older. And it's important to make sure your pediatrician's values align with yours.

When do I choose a pediatrician for my baby?

When you're thinking about when to choose a pediatrician, we recommend making the decision before your baby is born. A good time to choose a pediatrician is in your second trimester, around 20 weeks.

How do I locate a pediatrician near me?

Most local offices and organizations can be found online. You can find doctor reviews online as well. You can also try asking your ob/gyn or friends and family for pediatrician recommendations. Your health plan may have recommendations about local doctors too.

We know the months before a baby's arrival can be stressful. We can help make choosing a pediatrician easy for you. We have multiple pediatric locations to choose from so you can find a doctor close to home.

How will I know I've found my pediatrician?

At ProHealth, we offer meet-and-greets for expectant parents at no cost. These can be in-person or virtual visits. This pediatrician interview will give you a chance to get to know the doctors, tour the office and make an informed decision.

Having a meet-and-greet gives you time to ask important question, such as:

  • Are same-day appointments available?
  • What about after-hours care and virtual care options?
  • Do they accept your insurance?

It's a good idea to meet with several pediatricians to help figure out which doctor will be the best fit for you and your baby. Make sure to ask about:

  • Appointment time slots available
  • Doctor care styles, which can vary based on their degree and areas of expertise
  • Health plans accepted
  • Location hours

You can find more suggested questions to ask in baby books or online.
