It’s Picnic Time!

July 22, 2019

July is National Picnic Month, and it couldn’t be a better time to get outside and enjoy our Connecticut summer! A picnic can also be a healthy way to celebrate fresh local produce. Here are some picnic packing tips:

Pack the rainbow. Try to include as many food groups and colors of produce that you can. A fruit salad, veggie sticks and hummus and a whole grain sandwich with lettuce and tomato are great choices for a picnic lunch. Add some cucumber and/or strawberries to your water bottle for a delightful flavor boost!

Change up the time. An early morning hike and breakfast picnic can be perfect on a day that will be too hot later on. Pack whole grain waffle sandwiches spread with almond butter and fresh berries, and a fat free Greek yogurt parfait topped with fresh fruit.

Stay food safe. Be careful of leaving foods unchilled for too long. If you are bringing mayo or yogurt based salads, meats, or eggs- make sure to bring a cooler, and don’t let them sit out for more than an hour to be safe.

Clean up. There is nothing worse than leaving litter and trash behind in nature. Make sure to bring any trash out with you!
