In with the New (Year)
It is believed by many that the month of January was named for the Roman God Janus, who is the god of beginnings and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. This is a perfect image when approaching the start of a new year.
The New Year gives us a great opportunity to start fresh, but also to look at the past year and what we have accomplished and what we want to work on going forward. This can help to create our best goals for the year ahead. What improvements do you want to make? What do you want to continue doing? Here are some tips for creating resolutions for the new year ahead.
Make your goals reachable and realistic. Don’t set yourself up for failure before you even begin by setting an objective too large. You can make a goal bigger as you reach smaller achievements along the way. Succeeding at reaching a smaller target can give you the positive energy to keep working on and growing that goal.
Put together an action plan. “A goal without a plan is just a wish”. Make sure to write down how you will achieve your goals and then leave that plan out in the open, to remind you each day. Create a checklist of what you need to put in place in your life, to make your intent into an action.
Find someone to work on things with, even if you are not working towards the same goal. This partnership helps keeps you accountable, but also gives you a cheerleader that can make your hard work feel fun.
Don’t forget to celebrate your successes from the past year! It doesn’t all have to be about what you can make better. Honoring what you did well is a great reminder of what you are capable of and how good it can feel to succeed.
