Types of imaging tests

Digital radiography, or DR, is an advanced form of X-ray. It uses sensitive plates to capture digital images of the body. Benefits include fast, high-quality images at 80% less radiation than traditional X-rays.

This test uses low-dose X-ray technology to scan the lower back, hip or forearm to measure the amount of calcium/minerals in your bones. It's used to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and increases the chances of bone breaks.

Ultrasounds are also known as sonography or sonograms. This painless procedure uses sound waves, not radiation, to create images of the inside of the body. Ultrasounds are considered safe and noninvasive.

An echocardiogram uses sound waves to take real-time images of the structure and blood flow within your heart. We also offer Holter and wireless cardiac event monitors that record heart activity for days at a time.

An ABI test compares the blood flow in your arms and legs. It's quick and painless.

Common questions

Sound waves don't travel well through air. The gel serves as a connector, eliminating air and forming a bond between the ultrasound probe and the skin. This allows sound waves to travel into the body and create images.

When you drink water and don't empty the bladder, the ultrasound technologist can see the inside of your bladder. A full bladder also helps move a woman's uterus up and her bowels away to get a better image.

Fasting means not eating or drinking for 8 hours. This lowers the amount of gas in your stomach, making images clearer. Fasting also expands your gallbladder. When you eat, your gallbladder empties, which means it won't be seen on the test.

Yes, we can give you a copy of the imaging exam free of charge. We kindly ask for 24 hours to get the CD ready for you.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing with no metal zippers or clasps. Eyeglasses and jewelry should also be removed because they can in get in the way of the imaging. Wear socks and shoes that are easy to take off and put back on.
