How to Prepare for Your Exam

Preparing for an X-Ray Exam

There is no preparation for this exam.

Preparing for a Bone Density Exam

Please discontinue the use of Vitamin D and/or calcium pills on the day of the exam.

Preparing for an Ultrasound Exam

  • Abdominal Ultrasound—do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your exam. Take any prescribed medications as directed by your physician with small sips of water.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound—you should drink 32 ounces of water one hour prior to your appointment and do not empty bladder. You may eat normally.
  • Abdominal and Pelvic ultrasound scheduled together—do not eat or drink after midnight (12 hours prior to the exam). You should drink 32 ounces of water one hour prior to your appointment and do not void.
  • Carotid Ultrasound—there is no special preparation for this exam.
  • Renal Ultrasound—you should drink 16 ounces of water one hour prior to your appointment. Do not empty bladder. You may eat and drink as usual.
  • Scrotal/Testicular Ultrasound—there is no preparation for this exam.
  • Thyroid/Neck Ultrasound—there is no preparation for this exam.
  • Venous Doppler Arm or Leg Ultrasound—there is no preparation for this exam.

Preparing for an Echocardiogram

There is no preparation for an echocardiography exam.

Preparing for a Holter Monitor

There is no preparation needed to be hooked up with a holter monitor. Please be aware that this monitor is to be worn continuously for 24 hours with no bathing.

Preparing for a Cardiac Wireless Event Monitor

There is no preparation needed to be hooked up with a wireless event monitor.
