Night Terrors (Parasomnia)

Parasomnia is a disorder characterized by abnormal or unusual behavior of the nervous system during sleep. In a typical night terror episode, the individual will sit up in bed and scream or shout. The screaming can include kicking and thrashing, along with getting out of bed and running around the house. People who have night terrors will be unresponsive when trying to be woken up. When they do wake up, they will be confused and disoriented, with no memory of what took place. Night terrors most often occur during the first third of the night.
