It’s picnic time
July 22, 2019
July is National Picnic Month. It’s a great time to pack a basket and enjoy Connecticut’s beautiful summer. It’s also the perfect time to enjoy fresh, local fruits and vegetables.
Here are a few tips to make the most of your picnic:
- Eat a rainbow of foods — for example, fruit salad, veggie sticks, and sandwiches with lettuce and tomato. Add cucumber slices or strawberries to water for a refreshing flavor.
- Change the time. Who says picnics are only for lunch or dinner? Take an early morning hike and enjoy a breakfast picnic. Pack your basket with whole grain waffle sandwiches filled with almond butter and fresh berries.
- Keep your food safe. Remember, foods that include mayonnaise, yogurt, meats and eggs should be kept in a cooler. Don’t let them sit out for more than an hour or so.
- Clean up once your picnic is over. And be sure to throw away any used paper plates, napkins and water bottles.
