Summer sun safety

Text

Summer is a great time for fun in the sun. But it's important to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays. Overexposure to the sun can cause sunburns, make your skin look older and increase your risk of skin cancer.

This article gives you simple tips to stay safe while having fun in the sun.

Understanding UV Rays

The sun gives off different types of rays, called Ultraviolet or UV rays. There are two main types:

  • UVA rays: These rays can make your skin look older and cause wrinkles.
  • UVB rays: These rays can cause sunburns.

Both types of UV rays can lead to skin cancer and eye problems.

The UV Index

The UV index tells you how strong the sun's rays are each day. Check the UV index on your weather app or online. It helps you know when to take extra care to protect yourself.

Sunscreen tips

Using sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin. Here are some easy tips:

1. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen

This type of sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Use SPF 30 or higher

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. A sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher offers good protection.

3. Apply enough sunscreen

Put on enough sunscreen to cover all the skin that isn't covered by clothes. Don't forget your face, neck and ears.

The American Academy of Dermatology and the Food and Drug Administration recommend using about one ounce of sunscreen - equivalent to a shot glass - per application to cover the entire body. If you have a fuller figure, you may need a bit more.

4. Reapply often

Put on more sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating a lot.

5. Extra care for sensitive skin

For children and those with sensitive skin, consider using physical (mineral) sunscreens that have zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in them. These have a lower risk for skin irritation.

Additional sun safety tips

Here are more tips to keep you safe in the sun:

Stay in the shade

Try to stay in the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is strongest.

Wear protective clothes

Use hats with wide brims, long sleeves and long pants to cover your skin.

Wear sunglasses

Choose sunglasses that block UV rays to protect your eyes.

Use SPF lip balm

Use lip balm with sunscreen to protect your lips from the sun.

Avoid tanning

Tanning, whether in the sun or in tanning beds, can be harmful. It increases your risk of skin cancer and makes your skin look older. If you want a tan, try using sunless tanning products that you put on your skin.

Checking your skin

It's important to check your skin regularly for any changes. Look for new spots or changes in existing spots. If you notice anything unusual, see a doctor for a check-up.
